I did not expect the valley.
I had read Psalm 23 my whole life. I knew the words. I could recite them without thinking. But there is a difference between knowing the Shepherd in theory and needing Him in the dark.
When the path narrowed, and the silence grew heavy, I realized something unsettling — I believed in His promises, but I did not yet know how to rest in them.
“He restores my soul.”
The words sounded beautiful.
But restoration does not feel beautiful when it first begins. It feels like surrender. It feels like a loss. It feels like letting go of what you thought your life would look like.
And yet, in the place I thought would undo me, something deeper was forming.
The valley was not the end of me.

The Quiet Watch
I didn’t see it happening.
Nothing dramatic had fallen apart. I was still praying. Still reading. Still “steady.” But the edge I once carried had softened. The watchfulness that protected my healing had grown quiet.
It wasn’t a rebellion.
It was relaxation.
Somewhere between surviving the valley and enjoying the peace that followed, I loosened my guard. What I once discerned quickly, I now tolerate slowly. What once troubled my spirit, I learned to excuse.
Drift does not announce itself.
It begins in comfort.
And I learned that what God restores must be guarded — not out of fear, but out of reverence.

Stand Without Fear
Fear still speaks.
It just no longer decides.
There was a time when its voice shaped my obedience — when I delayed surrender to protect comfort, when I negotiated conviction to avoid loss, when I mistook hesitation for wisdom.
But the valley stripped me.
The watch disciplined me.
And somewhere in that formation, fear lost its authority.
It still whispers.
It no longer governs.
Peace governs.
I did not become fearless.
I became established.
And what is established is no longer governed by fear.
